A New Era of Diagnostic Imaging Begins at Almonte General Hospital: CT Scanner Officially Up and Running

October 08, 2024

Almonte, ON – The Mississippi River Health Alliance (“MRHA”) is proud to announce that Almonte General Hospital's (“AGH”) new CT scanner is officially operational, with the first patient scanned last week. This achievement brings essential diagnostic imaging closer to home, eliminating the need for residents to travel long distances for crucial tests.

The $3.2 million project, fully funded by generous community donations, marks the arrival of CT imaging at AGH for the first time. The Almonte General Hospital/Fairview Manor (AGH/FVM) Foundation played a vital role in fundraising, with contributions from over 2,200 donors, including a transformational gift from Art and Helen Levi, whose generosity has been recognized by naming the Helen & Art Levi Diagnostic Imaging Department.

“This is a transformative moment for our hospital and the entire region,” said Brad Harrington, President and CEO of MRHA. “Having the CT scanner here ensures timely, precise diagnostic services and helps us deliver critical care close to home.”

The CT scanner’s 360-degree cross-sectional imaging enables physicians to quickly diagnose conditions such as fractures, tumors, heart disease, and stroke, facilitating faster treatments and improving patient outcomes.

Before the installation of the scanner, AGH patients were referred to other hospitals for CT scans, often leading to delayed diagnoses. Now, patients can receive rapid results without the inconvenience of travel, allowing for timely interventions that are vital for effective care.

“Having access to this advanced technology is a game-changer for our community,” said Dr. Melanie Fortune, Chief of Staff at AGH. “Reducing wait times and diagnosing conditions earlier will have a tremendous impact on patient care and outcomes.”

Celebrating Sonography Week:

The launch of the CT scanner coincides with Sonography Week (October 6-12), an opportunity to celebrate the essential contributions of sonographers and radiology technologists who provide critical diagnostic insights at both Carleton Place District and Memorial Hospital and Almonte General Hospital. These professionals work behind the scenes to ensure the highest quality of care for patients across the region, whether through CT scans or ultrasound technology. MRHA proudly celebrates their dedication this week and every week.
